An Animal Mother by Mridul Biswas
If a dog bites a man, it's not a news at all, if a man bites a dog it becomes a. news-so runs a common saying. But a dog biting a man may become more than a news-a manifestation of the love of a mother.
It all happened one day when I was on my way back home with my mother. That was an x'mas day. I was making my way with much trouble through the crowded pavement. Suddenly. I was startled at a loud screeching and I looked out at the street. I found an auto applying brake, and an young stray dog screaming loudly. One of its legs was bleeding profusely. I understood that the vehicle had smashed its leg. By this time an old bitch, perhaps its mother, suddenly rushed at the spot and tried to lift her child up. She then began licking the bleeding leg. But all were in vain. The injured one was groaning and his mother was trying her best to carry him away. One who misses such a scene will not be able to feel what effort the mother exerted to hold him up and what worries she had within. The auto-driver, stupefied as he was at the suddenness of the event, could not think what he had done and what to do next. The 'mother' was sniffing the blood and looking all around like a 'mad dog'. The auto driver, sensing danger tried to whisk away from the spot. I was astounded to see that the mother bitch, seeing this ran after him in the twinkling of an eye with a great speed. I saw that the 'mother' caught up with the auto driver and jumped over the moving vehicle before biting his feet. The man fell down. The auto lurched to a halt. The pedestrians cried out, 'Oh! the mad dog, the mad dog!' The crowd began dispersing out of fear. The bitch by that time had returned to her child and once again tried to help her loving child to be on its feet once more!
It is really an unforgettable experience. We changed our way through a narrow lane and came back home. I stilI wonder 'what a mixture of the noble touch of love and formidable form of revenge it was in the 'Tiger-eats-tiger world of animals’!'
