Ratan was a station master at Dumka. In 2001 he was transferred by the Railways Department to Bankura . On 22 January he arrived at Bankura station at midnight. Not a creature could be seen any where. He wandered for a while on the empty platform. Then a coolie appeared as if from nowhere. His name was Mahim. Ratan asked him the address of Shivani Lodge where he was to put up for the night. But Mahim said that the lodge was closed by then. On his request Ratan spent the night at Mahim's house. He took dinner and went to bed. He got up in the morning and called Mahim in his high - pitched voice but got no answer. He looked around. The house was completely deserted. There was no one in it. Then he went to the neighbourhood and asked the local people about Mahim. Pat came the reply. Mahim had passed away two years ago. He was killed in a Railway accident while he was trying to board a running train. He had no close relations. So he spend most of his times at the Railway Station, his place of work. He appears there repeatedly especially on dark moonless nights.
